WHAT IS IT LIKE LIVING IN CHINA?
During the transition period into a new country, as one adjusts and more fully realizes the new surroundings and cultural changes, it is normal to experience real feelings of loneliness. Being ready for this now will help you while in China. There are many things you can do to combat such emotions, like having a clear purpose for your time in China as a teacher; which will see you through this time away from home and friends. Most of all, the best way to ward off these emotions is embracing the culture around you, immerse yourself by regularly interacting with your students and other Chinese teachers. You will soon find that the Chinese are eager to welcome you by teaching you about their culture, songs, language and public holidays. Take advantage of this opportunity to both teach and learn from them, this is what will enrich your China experience.
Learning Chinese does not come by easily, but it is more than worth the try. Mandarin lessons can be organised with your host school. No matter how basic or what few words you learn in Chinese, the Chinese will appreciate your effort and say your Chinese is great. Learning some Chinese will allow you to better function, simply because you will better understand them.
WHAT WILL LIFE BE LIKE AS A TEACHER?
While in China, our partners are ‘‘devoted to making your transition to living in China a smooth process, but be aware that you are entering an entirely different culture, one that views you as a representative of [the UK] itself. Though many of the schools have the same standard conditions and agreements, problems caused mainly from misunderstandings may occur. This can be a part of daily life in China. You are expected to deal with and resolve these issues professionally and diplomatically. If you are unsure of what you are entitled to, you may contact [your direct placement organization] at any time to seek advice. If you are dissatisfied with the results, we can intervene in solving the problem. You are not alone in China nor at the mercy of the school’s decision. Seldom have we encountered a school that is blatantly dishonest and unfair to a teacher. Rather, most problems arise because of cultural differences and lingual misunderstandings.’’ – Our Partner’s Voice
On a personal note, it has been my experience (Founder at Embrace China) that when a leader of a school does not understand you, you will rarely be told so. Rather, you may receive a smile, a nod, or a polite reply which may not be expressive of understanding. Therefore it is advisable to follow-up in order to not only ‘‘get things done’’ but find out his/her intentions for a given task. Please remember that although a Chinese leader may speak English, his/her way of communicating is still traditionally Chinese. As such, without proper follow-up one is left to having to resort to reading between the lines.

About Us

Co-founder – Jackeline Romero
I was first introduced to China through an immersive experience, teaching English in a Chinese University in Hunan province. Shortly after getting married my wife and I took a semester of teaching Spanish and English respectively, in China. Our lives have changed for the better as a direct result of that experience.
Upon returning to the USA and just before I graduated, I received an invitation to apply for a Chinese government scholarship to Study a Master back in Xiangtan, Hunan, where I had previously been teaching English. What a timely blessing that was for me and my family. I immersed myself again in this wonderful culture for 4 more years and strengthened bonds made two years earlier.
Embrace China is made of independent entities working together to educate Chinese students and impact both their lives and that of our participants. Our Network connections provides you with a bespoke service, second to none, leaving you in expert hands with constant support while in China. We have experienced first-hand working and living in China for many years and our partners, who are the driving force of Embrace China, provide the expertise to allocate you at an accredited institution in China seamlessly, and give you an all-around quality service. I find great happiness in the thought that I get to work with people I have gotten to know and who have thrived successfully in their field of expertise, which is providing for teachers in China. It is difficult to convey with words what you will take with you, wherever you go after your time in China, but going for the right reasons will make you a better person. This opportunity will open your mind to see and understand life with added value, it will open new doors and your soul will even be filled with greater love towards others around you. You will live the experience so that it will simply become a part of you, yes, you will grow as you embrace China.
